Keeping it weird in Austin, Texas

Formula 1’s return to America in 2012 went down so well that they’ve since added additional races in the States. A large part of that success can be put down to the Circuit of the Americas, which extended a superb welcome with huge crowds at the track and a lively reception in downtown Austin.

The peripatetic United States Grand Prix has been hosted at many venues, but it seems to have found a proper home at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas. Designed with Formula 1 intended to be the centrepiece of its calendar, COTA has insinuated itself into the F1 mainstream in a remarkably short space of time.

Key to COTA’s popularity has been good facilities, an excellent atmosphere generated by a large and vociferous crowd, and a track layout that generates exciting races. Turns 1, 11 and 12 are all good overtaking opportunities with the former pair supporting several different lines.

Borrowing liberally from other circuits, the first sector features a high-speed section of esses much like those at Silverstone and Suzuka, while the end of the lap has a lower speed complex reminiscent of Hockenheim’s stadium. Despite the long straights, downforce levels are high to cope with these final sector second- and third-gear corners, while suspension requires a difficult compromise between a soft car that will ride the kerbs well here, and a stiff car to cope with Sector 1.

Bruce McLaren, driving for Cooper, took his first Formula 1 victory at the first US Grand Prix, held in 1959 at Sebring, while the team he founded has won the race on eight occasions, most recently by Lewis Hamilton in 2012.

  • Just like it’s host city, the Circuit of the Americas has a lot going on.

The first turn is among F1’s most beloved corners. A 133 foot climb uphill that overlooks almost the entire track, Turn 1 is a real challenge and a great overtaking opportunity. Arriving after the start/finish straight, the first corner is wide, can be taken at different angles, and allows for late braking, all of which make it a great spot for overtaking. However, it is followed by a steep decline, meaning it’s a bit of a blind corner.

The slogan "keep Austin weird" was adopted by the city more than 20 years ago, and it perfectly sums up why we love the area quite so much.

With action off the track that’s as entertaining as on it, you’ll never be bored in Austin. The Texans love of partying, barbequing, and live music ensures a lively atmosphere, with a whole host of other activities to keep you busy.

Looking for something suitably weird? Head to Congress Avenue Bridge, where you can witness the nightly flight of 1.5 million bats that call the bridge home.

Oh, and don’t forget to purchase yourself some typical Texan cowboy boots from Allens Boots, which has been running since 1977.
