In his first season as Team Principal, Tony Kanaan led Arrow McLaren to its best ever season in 2025. Tony’s leadership guided the team to an impressive campaign featuring two wins, 12 podiums and three pole positions. Pato O’Ward capped it off by finishing second in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship, matching McLaren Racing’s best-ever series result first achieved by Johnny Rutherford across the 1974-76 seasons.
Tony originally joined Arrow McLaren in 2023 to race in the Indy 500 for the final race of his NTT INDYCAR SERIES career. He has since taken on increasingly influential roles within the organization, first beginning as Special Advisor in 2023 to Sporting Director in 2024 to Team Principal today. In his current role, Tony oversees team and driver development as well as key commercial relationships.
Born in Salvador, Brazil, in 1974, Tony is regarded as one of the most successful drivers in INDYCAR SERIES history. He began his professional racing career in 1998, winning his first race at Michigan Speedway in July 1999. He went on to become the 2004 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion and winner of the 2013 Indianapolis 500.
Tony raced in 27 seasons in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, totaling 388 starts (2nd all-time behind Mario Andretti), 4,077 laps led (11th-most), 79 top-three finishes (12th-most) and 17 wins (tied for 28th-most) throughout his career. He remains the series’ record holder with 318 consecutive starts made from the Portland Grand Prix in 2001 through the first race of the 2020 season at Texas Motor Speedway.
Tony has been a fan favorite in the series for decades and always maintains one of the largest followings on social media in the paddock. He’s a dedicated family man as well as runner and cyclist who has competed in several triathlon, half-Ironman and Ironman competitions. Kanaan also spends time supporting underprivileged children in his native Brazil, while he is also on the board of a variety of Indianapolis organizations, including the Indianapolis Children’s Museum and Riley Children’s Health.
